“I am sitting on the edge of my eye”.
For more than fifteen years, the portrait situated before and within a landscape has formed the structural basis of my exploration of the painted human figure. In engaging with the medium of painting, my aim is to question the established conventions of both landscape painting and portraiture in their inherited pictorial form. Central to this inquiry, on the one hand, is the rendering visible of the disappearance of that which can be grasped linguistically, through which an other becomes manifest; and on the other hand, the gaze emanating from the image itself, accompanying the viewer in their visual passage through the landscape.
During the pandemic, encounters with other people and the experience of social spaces became extremely difficult, if not impossible. This led me to concentrate, in solitude before nature, on the representability of what was seen, first in the form of a watercolour study, and subsequently to transform that seen experience in the studio into oil on canvas. These paintings always come into being within a single session, in which the events seen and rendered in watercolour outdoors, together with nocturnal introspection, assemble themselves into an inner portrait on the canvas. Instead of a title, each finished work bears the date on which it was painted.
